Lithuanian Technical Library set up WIPO Depository Library
Since January 2013 Lithuanian Technical Library (LTL) has acquired the status of WIPO Depository Library in the Republic of Lithuania. The World intellectual property Organization (WIPO) is the United Nations agency dedicated to the use of intellectual property (patents, copyright, trademarks, designs, etc.) as a means of stimulating innovation and creativity. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity to enhance cooperation between LTL and WIPO in the dissemination of intellectual property information in Lithuania, raise awareness of WIPO’s activities and services and to emphasize the importance of intellectual property in promoting social and economic development. Upon agreement with WIPO, The State Patent Bureau of Lithuania and Lithuanian Technical Library the approval to set up WIPO Depository Library was achieved in November 2012. 49 WIPO depository libraries which comply with the obligations incumbent upon Depository Libraries have been created in 70 countries. Depository Libraries are set up in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Romania, and Slovakia.
Since January 2013 WIPO will supply LTL with one copy of all unrestricted WIPO publications issued, including books, reports and periodicals, in addition to electronic materials (CDs, DVDs, etc), hereinafter referred to as “WIPO Publications”, as they are published and made available to the public. The LTL agrees to maintain all books, reports, series received from WIPO in good condition and to catalog and include all books, reference materials and periodicals in the library catalog (www.tb.lt ). They will be available and easily accessed to by all users of the library free of charge during library opening hours.
New publications received by the LTL from WIPO will be exhibited on the “New Arrival” counters in timely manner.
Lithuanian Technical Library is a public national specialized library of the state significance, the main goal of which is to ensure needs of users for obtaining scientific technical information. The LTL is the biggest library of Lithuania that accumulates publications in the area of technology and economy, Patent specifications, standards and other normative documents, registers of firms and catalogues.
The library has its divisions in cities of Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Panevėžys. At the end of 2012, LTL had a collection of 48 million printings and documents (descriptions of inventions constituting the largest part), and 8000 registered users. More than 200 exhibitions and events were organized in the year 2012.
