Summarizing 2011 Outcomes at Sakpatenti
On December 29, Irakli Ghvaladze , Chairman of Sakpatenti, summarized the work of the National intellectual property Center at a special briefing. Chairman announced the largest number of trademarks filed by companies specializing in different fields (wines and spirits, banking, pharmaceutics and food production). Number of granted patents for inventions, utility models and designs was also made public.
From the total number of trademarks registered at Sakpatenti (45 380), 2960 are filed by Georgian applicants. The largest number of trademarks (240) is registered by Aversi-Pharma, a company specializing in the field of pharmaceutics. In the field of wines and spirits, company Chateau Mukhrani is in the lead. In the banking sector Liberty Bank is leading as the owner of the largest quantity of trademarks. Company Barambo is a leader in a number of trademark applications in the field of production of foodstuffs.
The total number of patents currently in force equals 2038. Of these, 1021 are foreign and 1017 local Patent holders. At the same time, 251 certificates issued for designs are in force.
Priorities for the next year were also disclosed at the briefing.
A Technology Transfer Center, which will be established in 2012, will focus on the commercialization of inventions. The work will continue in cooperation with different state agencies for the extension of the list of appellations of origin, accordingly, the registration process of traditional brands continues at Sakpatenti. Special attention will be paid to the issue of registration and protection of Georgian brands abroad. The coming year will be important from the viewpoint of copyright protection as well. 2012 is envisaged to be a year of numerous international events and seminars.
The visit of the Director General of the World intellectual property Organization is planned at the opening ceremony of a new building of Sakpatenti.
